Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is shaped by mountains, wide valleys and a strong nomadic tradition. Around Issyk-Kul, one of the world’s largest alpine lakes, riders still cross open pastures on horseback. High in the Tian Shan range, treks to places like Ala-Kul reveal turquoise lakes surrounded by glaciers and rugged peaks. In summer, herders move to high mountain pastures near Song-Kul, where travellers can stay in traditional yurts and share meals overlooking the grasslands. In the south, the markets of Osh continue a trading tradition that dates back to the Silk Road, while the ancient Burana Tower stands quietly on the steppe. For travellers willing to go a little further off-piste, Kyrgyzstan’s big landscapes give a glimpse into a way of life that still follows the seasons.

Travelling as it should be

Kyrgyzstan was the trip that made every other trip I'd ever done look ordinary. You're riding through a mountain valley on horseback with no other tourists in sight, sleeping in a yurt at 3000 metres with a family who's been living this way for generations, watching a golden eagle hunt from a berkutchi's fist. Nobody warned me it would be this good.
