Most people cannot find Kyrgyzstan on a map. By the time they come home they cannot stop talking about it. This is a country that has not been smoothed out for tourism. The roads are rough and the landscapes are enormous. A shepherdess on horseback will ride alongside your 4WD just to see where you are going. A family will invite you into their yurt before you have exchanged a single word in common. An eagle hunter will place a golden eagle on your arm in a mountain valley and you will stand there trying to process what is happening to you. Seventy percent of the country sits above 1500 metres. There are more yurts than hotels and more horses than cars in the valleys. A nomadic culture that has been moving through these mountains seasonally for centuries still does. The trip moves through the full sweep of it. Bishkek, simultaneously Soviet, Central Asian and genuinely surprising. Issyk-Kul, the world's second largest alpine lake. The hot springs of Altyn Arashan. The Seven Bulls rock formations of Jeti-Oguz. Son-Kul lake at 3016 metres, reached on horseback, where the silence on a clear night is one of the more extraordinary things available anywhere on earth. And Kel-Suu near the Chinese border, where the cliffs rise vertically from the water and the only way in is on a horse. Fourteen nights. A small ARRIVAL crew. All accommodation, transport, meals and entrance fees included.

Son-Kul Lake at 3016 Metres
This is the one that people describe when someone asks them about Kyrgyzstan. Son-Kul is a high alpine lake surrounded on all sides by rolling meadows where shepherd families graze their herds every summer as they have done for centuries. There are no permanent structures. No roads that continue beyond the lake. No phone signal. No electricity except what the yurt camp generator produces for the kitchen.
The approach is by horseback for a full day, climbing through alpine meadows as the valley drops away below and the altitude builds. By the time the lake appears on the horizon you have earned the view. The two nights at Son-Kul, sleeping in a traditional yurt with the stars visible through the smoke hole above, are what most ARRIVAL travellers describe first when they try to explain why Kyrgyzstan is different from anywhere else they have been.
