Morocco

Morocco wakes up your senses. Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fna square swirls with snake charmers and mint tea, the smell of grilled meat drifting through the square. Further out, camel caravans cross the Sahara beneath impossibly clear night skies, while Atlantic waves roll into the surf towns of Essaouira. Wander the maze-like streets of Fez past centuries-old tanneries, unwind in a steamy hammam in the Atlas Mountains, or lose track of time in the blue-washed alleys of Chefchaouen.

Get lost in Fez

Getting lost in Fez is less a mishap than a rite of passage. By the third time you've doubled back through the same alley in the medina, you stop trying to find your way out and just let the city take you where it wants. The light through carved plasterwork in a riad changes every hour. Someone brings you mint tea you didn't ask for and it turns out to be the best thing you've drunk all trip. Then there's the desert. The silence of it, the scale of it, the way the dunes turn gold just before the sun goes down.
