Egypt

Egypt's history is impossible to ignore. An ancient heartbeat thumps through Giza's pyramids at dawn. The pyramids rise from the desert outside Cairo. Felucca boats drift quietly along the Nile. The streets of the capital buzz with markets, traffic and the smell of koshari cooking on every corner. Snorkel shark-filled Red Sea reefs, hot-air balloon over Luxor's Karnak temples, or haggle for silver in Khan el-Khalili's feverish bazaars. It’s a place where ancient history sits right alongside everyday life. Temples, deserts and riverbanks have been drawing travellers here for centuries.

Drift down the Nile

Egypt broke my sense of time completely. You're standing in front of the pyramids at dawn before the crowds arrive and they're older than anything you've ever tried to comprehend and they're just there, rising out of the desert like it's nothing. Then you're on a felucca drifting down the Nile that evening and Luxor's temples are glowing on the bank and someone brings you tea and you think, people have been doing exactly this for thousands of years. Egypt doesn't let you stay in the present. You feel the past.
