WORDS BY: MATT & JACK

Reflecting on the streets, sands and soul of Morocco
We caught up with the Inspired Unemployed boys about their time in Morocco. No sightseeing checklist, no expectations – just vibes. What they got? Chaos, colour, warmth and more tagine than they could get through.
Talk to us about Morocco. Where did you go
Jack: We started in Marrakech – honestly one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. Full of culture and life.
Matt: The Medina was amazing. It was so rich with colour, with food, with people. Unbelievable. Rugs hanging from walls, really decorative alleyways and the coolest interior design.
J: Then we went to Essaouira – good luck spelling that – this epic beach town with tight little laneways, great restaurants, bars and just a really good energy. It felt like we experienced local life there. We also spent a night in the Agafay Desert. That was wild. Big skies, a kind of stillness to the air and camels. Lots of camels.
What was so special about it?
M & J: The culture.
M: Yeah, definitely the culture. It’s just different – a mix of Africa and Europe, and it feels like its own thing. Its own vibe. The people, the way everything moves – it’s like nothing we’ve ever experienced.
Any standout sights, sounds, or tastes?
M: Everything we tasted was amazing. Especially the local dish… what was it called again?
J: Tagine.
M: Yeah, that’s it. Unbelievable – so yummy. We pretty much ate one every day. Twice a day.
J: The Medina in Marrakech was definitely a standout.
M: Yeah, the old town was INSANE. So much colour, so many smells, scooters flying through the souks, people yelling. That was so cool.
J: And the desert. That’s where we heard this jazz band under the stars. That will stay with us I reckon.

“We heard this jazz band under the stars. That will stay with us I reckon.”
If travel is all about emotional connection, what feeling sums it up?
J: Fulfilled. Warm.
M: Yeah, excitement and fulfilment. It’s hard to express – just felt good to be there.
What’s one thing anyone visiting has to do?
J: Walking the streets of Marrakech. Eating the food. Taking in the sights.
M: And meeting the locals.
What was on the packing list?
M: A warm jumper – it actually got colder than we thought. Sunscreen. A good pair of sunnies for driving round on motorbikes. A decent camera – you’ll want to take photos of everything, that’s what I was doing. And a surfboard if you’re heading to the coast
What were you listening to?
M: Parcels were the go-to. Soundtracked the whole trip – they just fit the vibe.
J: The Medina in Marrakech was definitely a standout.
Did you meet any interesting people?
J: Yeah definitely – our guide was a total legend.
M: Oh my god, he was the best.
J: I can’t remember his name, but he was so kind. The nicest person, honestly. Just a proper good human. He taught us a lot about the culture. So did the ladies that we met at the cooking class.
M: We ended up playing soccer with a bunch of locals at one point – we met some funny characters that day. So yeah, a lot of good people. I think it was the people that really made our time there memorable.
