Snow to Surf Adventure: Mount Hotham to the Gippsland Coast

Five days moving through Victoria's best kept secrets. Ski or snowboard Mount Hotham, surf the Gippsland breaks, soak at Metung Hot Springs and drive the Great Alpine Road in between. Small group of nine, most meals included, transport sorted. Some trips take you somewhere new. This one shows you somewhere familiar in a way you've never seen it.

Most trips ask you to pick a lane. Mountains or coast. Snow or surf. This one says yes to all of it. One morning you're rugged up at 1600m watching your breath disappear into cold alpine air. Four days later you're in a wetsuit on the Gippsland Coast trying to remember what a ski slope feels like. That's the arc of this trip. Five days through Victoria's alpine and coastal landscapes: starting high in the snowfields of Mount Hotham and ending somewhere far warmer on the Gippsland Coast, with a board underfoot and salt on your skin. The Great Alpine Road does the connecting, winding east through High Country towns and river bends that most people never get to see. It's built for the kind of traveller who doesn't want to choose. A duo wanting something different. A small group of mates after more than a standard weekend away. Transport from Melbourne and back, lift passes for two days on Mount Hotham, beginner-friendly surf lessons on the Gippsland Coast, a soak at Metung Hot Springs, most meals, and accommodation split between an alpine chalet and a coastal cottage retreat. Small group of nine. This is Victoria doing what it does best.

First Turns on Mount Hotham

There's a reason serious skiers come to Mount Hotham. It sits above the cloud line with long runs, steep chutes and views that make the chairlift ride worth it on its own. Whether you're linking your first turns or already comfortable on a black run, two days up here never feels like enough. With an included lift pass and a host who knows the mountain well, all you’ve gotta do is just follow the snow.

Activities

The fun stuff

Days 2 & 3: Mount Hotham Ski or Snowboard

This is what you're here for. Two days on one of Victoria's most scenic mountains. Steep terrain, long runs and views that earn the chairlift ride on their own. Lift pass included, host on the mountain with you. Whether you're carving confidently or finding your feet for the first time, Hotham has the runs for it. Feel the skier’s high at Après in the village afterwards, or head back to the chalet fireplace for a hot chocolate.

Day 3: The Great Alpine Road

Not just a transfer. The road east from the Victorian Alps through High Country towns, open farmland and river bends is one of Australia's great drives and it sits right in the middle of this itinerary.

Day 4: Surf Lessons on the Gippsland Coast

A welcome surprise for most people on this trip. Board and wetsuit sorted, instructor on the sand, quiet coastline with no crowds and no pressure. The focus here is actually learning. By the end of the session the mountain feels like a lifetime ago.

Day 4: Metung Hot Springs

Geothermal pools set against the Gippsland Lakes with nothing on the schedule. After four days of skiing, driving and surfing this is exactly where you want to be. Stay as long as the light holds.
