Okinawa Off-Grid: A Self-Drive Loop Through Japan's Wild South

Ten nights of open road, outer islands and raw Okinawan culture by 4x4 campervan. This isn't the Japan you've seen before. It's tropical, unhurried and completely off the tourist trail. Two island ferry crossings, a full-day jungle trek, traditional house stays and the freedom to explore at a pace that actually lets the place sink in. One to four travellers. Your road. Your rules.

Okinawa isn't like the rest of Japan. The pace is slower, the water is warmer and the culture has its own distinct identity, shaped by centuries of trade, isolation and a deep connection to the sea. For ten nights you'll drive a fully equipped 4x4 campervan through Okinawa's main island and two of its outer islands, sleeping on coastal camp sites, in traditional Okinawan houses and, on the final night, in a hotel in Naha before a guided izakaya tour sends you home right. The route takes you from busy fish markets in the south to remote cape headlands in the north, with a full-day jungle trek, a ferry crossing to Zamami Island and an overnight on Izena Island in between. This is a self-drive trip. An on-the-ground team is with you via WhatsApp throughout, there to help you get the most out of each day and book optional add-ons if you want them. Built for one to four travellers, this trip suits people who want structure without a schedule, culture without a tour group, and enough open road to feel like Okinawa is actually theirs for a while.

Full Day Jungle Trek

Okinawa's jungle is full of dense canopy, river crossings and terrain that asks something of you. This is the physical centrepiece of the trip and one of the most immersive days on the itinerary. No tourist trail, no crowds. Just you, the jungle and a guide who knows where they're going. You'll earn the beach BBQ that follows.

Jimmny Upgrade

The Suzuki Jimny Sierra, a small, rugged, cult status for a reason. Built for two with everything dialled: rooftop tent, fridge, solar power, and smart storage. It’ll take you places bigger rigs won’t, then let you pull up and call it home. Less space, more adventure.

Jimmny Upgrade

FJ Cruiser Upgrade

The Toyota FJ Cruiser, a proper off-road icon. Big, capable, and built to go anywhere. Fully kitted for the road less travelled: rooftop tent, full camp kitchen, loads of space, and serious 4x4 capability. It’s your rolling basecamp for longer, wilder trips. More space. More comfort. Same freedom to pull up anywhere and stay a while.

FJ Cruiser Upgrade

Delica Upgrade

The Mitsubishi Delica, part van, part 4x4, full cult classic. Built for the crew (or just more space to spread out), with a rooftop tent, dual sleeping setup, and a proper rolling basecamp feel. Park up anywhere: beach, jungle, roadside, and you’re good to go. More room. More comfort. Still goes where most vans don’t.

Delica Upgrade

Nissan Caravan Upgrade

The Nissan Caravan: your rolling basecamp. More space, more comfort, still built for the road less travelled. Fully kitted with a rooftop tent, full camp setup, power, and loads of room to spread out. It’s less “car”, more “hotel on wheels.” Pull up anywhere, sleep anywhere, stay longer.
